Our Story
We’re the Curry family.

In August of 2020, we signed the deed to 45 acres of farm and forest land near Arabia Mountain, one of our favorite places to hike just outside of Atlanta. The property belonged to Mrs. Tippens, who grew up here and didn’t want her parents’ beloved homestead to be demolished. We could feel the care their family had once given this place, and while we could have never imagined the wild journey of restoration, patience and learning we were embarking upon, it is truly an honor to steward this thriving ecosystem and to share it with others.
Our dream to own land started with remembering our own childhoods spent running through forests, splashing in creeks, and beginning to realize what our kids were missing. We quickly found this wasn’t unique to our family. Many of us only experience “nature” as a destination in small doses, often from a distance. It’s easy to forget we are vital organisms and a critical part of nature ourselves, particularly when the forests where we once built forts as kids have been cleared for strip malls and subdivisions. That’s why it felt more important than ever that we find a place that might have otherwise had a similar fate, and turn it into a protected habitat for humans and other creatures of all sizes.
We looked far and wide before we landed here, and knew almost immediately that this was THE place. We were drawn in by the historic home, mature fruit trees, and dense woods. It felt like we had been transported somewhere much farther away, to an earlier & simpler time. We’ve tried to maintain that feeling throughout each space, using & repurposing what was already there and adding pre-loved things from bygone eras.
Arguably one of the best parts of Waybird is that it sits within the Arabia Mountain Overlay & is next door to the Arabia Mountain Heritage Alliance, which ensures the natural beauty surrounding the farm will stay protected.
We’ve spent these last years revitalizing the property, restoring the old 1890s farmhouse, planting vegetables, native flowers, berry patches and fruit trees. We also added honey bee hives and chickens for fresh eggs. We have done all of this with the hope that we can share this space with others, hosting family gatherings, reunions, workshops and simple play days.
We need spaces that get us off of our devices, so we center all of our projects around the goal of getting people outside to play, learn, and heal. We believe Waybird is a relaxing, judgement-free, genuinely great place to do so. We hope you’ll visit soon!
